Tiaki Whānau Tiaki Ora (Protecting Whānau, Protecting Life), is designed to build healthy whānau by increasing their awareness of risk factors to suicide and the strategies that will strengthen whānau resilience. The approach is by whānau for whānau, where champions are given the tools and resources to share with their own whānau, hapū, and iwi.
In July, Te Rau Matatini completed the pilot in Te Tai Tokerau and the Hawke’s Bay with a celebration and prize giving that was attended by whānau and champions who participated in the programme. We are pleased to report that 17 whānau champions have taken toolkits into over 150 whānau homes and preliminary findings are very positive. Te Rau Matatini have set a target to reach 1000 homes across eight regions. We recently launched the programme in Counties Manukau which will build upon this commitment and look forward to going into other regions.
