The Christmas Box Project is a fantastic initiative which has provided over 80,000 boxes of kai to whānau in need during the festive season since 2001 across many communities in Aotearoa. Christmas Box started in Whangarei in 2015 with 500 boxes, led by Te Hau Āwhiowhio ō Otangarei Trust. This year Te Rau Matatini is proud to support the Christmas Box extension of 500 boxes for the first time to the Hokianga and mid-north for whānau. Over 100 volunteers have been involved packing the boxes and distributing them to whānau; one volunteer said: “I feel so humbled to be part of this kaupapa”.
The Christmas Box project has been profiled twice by Te Kaea (1,2). During the first story, Terri Cassidy (Kaiwhakaoho Mauri, Te Rau Matatini) was one of the volunteers packing boxes. Terri spoke about how the boxes provide enough kai to whānau for a day and can be the impetus for whānau to spend quality time together.
