Mainstream models and their programmes often have limited application in meeting the holistic needs and realities of Māori populations. Over time, Māori health professionals have developed models of practice to better reflect Māori realities and to integrate elements of importance from the past, the present and a vision for the future into their practice.
It is possible to build the strengths and capacity of Māori populations when health service delivery and therapeutic practice is centred in Te Ao Māori. That is, an approach that recognises the integrity of being Māori; that acknowledges the role of whānau and enhances te reo me ona tikanga.
