Hearing the Perspectives of Whānau

National consultation hui are underway for Māori whānau with experience of supporting a loved one with mental illness and addiction related challenges.  The aim is to identify the desires of whānau and from these to create standards of practice for mental health services when working with Māori.  

Key highlights thus far have included:

  • Whānau appreciation for being able to share stories with other whānau with similar stories
  • Whānau frustration at not being heard and listened to
  • Whānau exasperation at the lack of action and supports to help them with their loved one
