On the 13th of September Te Rau Matatini staff and whānau participated in the International Association for Suicide Prevention World Suicide Prevention Day Cycle Around the Globe event, a two-week event to raise awareness of the risk factors to suicide and to fund suicide prevention activities. In 2018, the Cycle Around the Globe event ran from the 1st -17th of September. This event supports World Suicide Prevent Day (10th of September).
The Cycle Around the Globe event is a challenge for people around the world to collectively cycle the globe (40,075 km/24,900 miles) to encourage people to engage with each other and spread awareness of suicide prevention. This was the first year that Te Rau Matatini participated in the event by pledging to cycle 25 kilometres. We had a small but solid crew of Kirikiriroa based kaimahi and whānau who rode together, and those who were not able to participate this time cheered on the group. Given the high Māori suicide rates and Te Rau Matatini’s ongoing commitment to suicide prevention through our Waka Hourua programme, Te Rau Matatini was eager to participate and support the growth of this event in Aotearoa and will be exploring other events to continue the kaupapa.
